Join the Migration Mission!

Every spring, something incredible happens right in our backyard… river herring and American eels begin their annual migration, traveling through our local rivers and streams—and we need your help to track their journey!

Save the Great South Bay is teaming up with Seatuck Environmental on the Long Island Volunteer River Herring & Eel Survey - a community-powered effort that brings together everyday residents, nature lovers, and citizen scientists to monitor these amazing fish runs.

Where you can get involved:

  • Bellmore Creek

  • Massapequa Creek

  • Unqua River (East Massapequa)

  • Carlls River (Babylon Village)

  • Sampawams Creek (West Islip)

  • West Broo (Great River/Oakdale)

What you’ll do:

  • Visit a local stream once a week til end of May (on your schedule!)

  • Observe and count (approximately) migrating fish

  • Help identify where these species are still holding on—and where they need help

No experience? No problem! All registered volunteers will receive training, so you’ll feel confident and ready to jump in.

Why it matters:Your observations provide critical data that helps restore fish passage, improve habitat, and rebuild populations of these ecologically important species.

This is your chance to start where you stand and play a real role in restoring our local waterways.

Be a steward of the streams and help bring the fish back.
